Who is Santa Claus?

In christian on December 25, 2008 at 6:23 am

Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nicholas, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or simply “Santa”, is the legendary and mythical figure who, in many Western cultures, brings gifts to good children during the late evening and overnight hours of Christmas Eve, December 24 or on his Feast Day, December 6 (Saint Nicholas Day). The legend may have part of its basis in hagiographical tales concerning the historical figure of Saint Nicholas.

While Saint Nicholas was originally portrayed wearing bishop’s robes, in modern times, Santa Claus is generally depicted as a plump, jolly, white-bearded man wearing a red coat with white collar and cuffs, white-cuffed red trousers, and black leather belt and boots. This image became popular in the United States in the 19th century due to the significant influence of caricaturist and political cartoonist Thomas Nast. This image has been maintained and reinforced through song, radio, television, and films. In the United Kingdom and Europe, his depiction is often identical to the American Santa, but he is commonly called Father Christmas.

One legend associated with Santa says that he lives in the far north, in a land of perpetual snow. The American version of Santa Claus lives at the North Pole, while Father Christmas is said to reside in Lapland, Finland. Other details include: that he is married and lives with Mrs. Claus; that he makes a list of children throughout the world, categorizing them according to their behavior (“naughty” or “nice”); that he delivers presents, including toys, candy, and other presents to all of the good boys and girls in the world, and sometimes coal or sticks to the naughty children, in one night; and that he accomplishes this feat with the aid of magical elves who make the toys, and eight or nine flying reindeer who pull his sleigh.

There has long been opposition to teaching children to believe in Santa Claus. Some Christians say the Santa tradition detracts from the religious origins and purpose of Christmas. Other critics feel that Santa Claus is an elaborate lie, and that it is unethical for parents to teach their children to believe in his existence.  Still others oppose Santa Claus as a symbol of the commercialization of the Christmas holiday, or as an intrusion upon their own national traditions.

Devoted Pig doing rounds at Balaji Temple

In Reports, hinduism on December 16, 2008 at 6:16 am
Devoted Pig doing rounds at Balaji Temple.

Devoted Pig doing rounds at Balaji Temple.

Ever seen a devotee doing rounds (pradakshina, parikrama) in a temple continuously for 8 hours? If that is a wonder then this will blow your mind off. Because the devotee who did rounds in the temple non-stop from morning 7 till 6 in the evening was not a human but a pig! Surprised?

This incident happened on Sunday in the sleepy village of Siddhantham in the West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Early in the morning a pig was seen trying to gain entry into the local Balaji temple and was shooed away by the people around. But the undettered pig made entry into the temple unobserved and began to do rounds (parikrama, pradakshina) around the ‘dhwaja stamba’. The villagers were surprised and tickled. They decided to stay and watch how long the pig would continue its eccentricity. But the pig had no intention of leaving. Minutes stretched to hours and the indefatigable pig was still doing rounds. What began as a simple funny event in the morning ended up as a wonder of wonders when the pig was still seen doing rounds at 6 in the evening. After 6 the pig stopped and went away. The surprised villagers talked about the incident for a while and left.

What came next astounded the whole village. Early next morning on Monday the pig came back. This time, instead of going directly to the temple, it first went to the Godavari river nearby and took a bath! Then the wet pig went into the temple and resumed its rounds in the temple. The media was notified and soon the temple was filled with visitors and the press. The undeterred pig went about its rounds until around afternoon it collapsed out of fatigue. The concerned villagers rushed forward and nursed the pig. A few minutes later the pig regained its energy and began its rounds once more. But it collapsed once more and a doctor was called. The doctor diagnosed the pig to be suffering with Encephelomeningitis – an inflammation in the brain and meninges. He pronounced the pig would die in two days.

The village is now in shock and wonder. Some even considered if the pig was the Varaha avatar of Lord Vishnu but the media rejected the proposal. The devotees and the temple management are currently taking care of the fallen pig. The villagers are right now praying at the temple for the recovery of the pig.

Shiva Gayatri and its meaning

In Vedic, hinduism on December 15, 2008 at 6:55 am

Shiva Gayatri is one of the most powerful Gayatri Mantras. It is dedicated to Shiva (Siva, Rudra).
Shiva is the destroyer and the God of sexuality. As a destroyer, Shiva destroys all evils in the body and mind, thus purifying the aspirant. He also makes things clear in the mind which is a natural consequence of destruction of evil in body and mind. Since He is also the god of fertility and sexuality, chanting Shiva gayatri gives the aspirant to control baser instincts like desire for sex, etc.Worship of Shiva dates back to pre-Vedic and Vedic period. He is one of the most powerful forces controlling creation.

What is Dattatreya Jayanti?

In Vedic, hinduism on December 12, 2008 at 7:32 am

Today is Dattatreya Jayanti. So who is Dattatreya and what does this Dattatreya Jayanti mean to all who worship him?

Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Margaseersha (Margashirsha) month. On that day, the feast of Dattatreya is celebrated by his worshippers.

Dattatreya is the combined avatar of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. There is a very interesting story behind the birth of Dattatreya.

Many centuries ago, there lived a rishi (sage, muni) called Atri. His wife Anasuya was very devoted and a pativrata. Narada used to talk a lot about Anasuya and her devotion to her Atri. That made Saraswati, Lakhsmi and Parvati jealous of Anasuya. They decided to really test the strength of Anasuya’s fidelity to her husband Atri. So they requested their husbands Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara (Siva) to test Anasuya.

So Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Shankar) disguised themselves as sages and go to pativrat Anasuya’s house when her husband Atri was not at home. Anasuya welcomed the trinity and requests them to stay for lunch.

Brahma, Visnu and Shiva agree to that but they put one condition. They ask Anasuya to serve them naked.

Anasuya is shocked but cannot refuse the sages. But at the same time she is a devoted wife and hence cannot stand naked before three strange men even though the three are sages. Finally Anasuya hit upon a solution. With the power of her sincerity and devotion she turned the trinity
into three babies. She then removed her clothes and served the three babies their food. She treated the babies as if they were her own.

Anasuya’s husband Atri returns and immediately recognizes the babies for who they are. Anasuya tells her husband about the sages. Atri explains to his wife who the three actually were. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva reappear in their own forms and bless the devoted couple. They leave back to the heavens but they also leave a part of themselves in the form of a baby. This baby is named Dattatreya and thus Dattatreya is born.

Dattatreya remained the son of Anasuya and Atri. He grew up to be a sage and a celibate. He remained digambara (naked) throughout his life.

Varuna Gayatri and its meaning

In Vedic, hinduism on December 4, 2008 at 5:49 am

Lord Varuna is one of the Trinity of the Vedas. He was originally the god of Rta (universal law and celestial order) during the vedic period. He is the supreme keeper of law and cosmic order. Hence Varuna Gayatri is a very powerful mantra that can be used to bring order to your house, family, body, career, education, etc. Since Varuna is also the lord of the waters, it is said chanting the Varuna Gayatri can ward off any harm from water.

Varuna Gayatri is also very beneficial for couples who are always quarreling or having disagreements between them, because the Varuna Gayatri increases the love between man and woman. It is good for newly weds as well as husband and wife who have been married for long.

Likewise chant Varuna Gayatri to get rid of disorders in your body and mind. It is a very powerful mantra and can be chanted at any time of the day.

Here’s the Varuna Gayatri:

Aum Jalbimbaye Vvidmahe
Nila Purushaye Dhimahi
Tanno Varunah Prachodayat

Translation:

Om, Let us meditate on the reflection of water
O person of ocean blue, give me higher intellect
And let the God of water illuminate my mind

As noted in the tranlation, meditating upon the Varuna Gayatri also helps the aspirant find out all evils hidden within the mind and body. There is a legend illustrating this point.

It is said that Sage Vasistha was a very close associate of Lord Varuna. Once the sage committed some sin unconsciously and Varuna, being righteous as ever and undiscriminating in the enforcement of the cosmic order, punished sage Vasistha and cut his friendship with the sage. Sage Vasistha came to realize he committed some sin unconsciously and prayed to Lord Varuna to tell him what the sin was and also free him from the sin.

As the story illustrates, praying to Varuna or chanting Varuna Gayatri brings about illumination for an aspirant and reveals all hidden evils in the aspirant’s body and mind.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and its meaning

In hinduism on December 1, 2008 at 12:15 pm

There are very few mantras that stand on par with Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (also known as Mahamrityunjay Mantra, Rudra Mantra, Tryambakam Mantra or Maha Sanjivini Mantra). This mantra is said to have the power to remove all sufferings, ward off all evils, remove diseases and bestow the aspirant with health and energy. And it is said that when this mantra is it chanted with great devotion and serious contemplation it is said that the knowledge of this birth and death cycle is revealed to the aspirant. And thus it helps in overcoming the fear of death.

The literal translation of this name means Great Death-conquering Mantra. This mantra is from the Vedas. It is written in the Yajur Veda (3-60). This mantra worships a three-eyed deity commonly identified with Lord Shiva. It is also called Tryambakam Mantra or Mrita-Sanjivini mantra or Rudra Mantra. The reason for it being named Tryambakam Mantra is self explanatory because it worships a three-eyed deity. Similary, since the mantra observes Shiva in His fiery aspect of Rudra, it is also called Rudra Mantra.

The name Mrita-Sanjivini mantra has a story behind it. It is said that Sage Sukracharya accepted a challenge of Lord Indra and took up a rigorous penance of hanging upside down from a tree with his face being fanned with fumes of a fire direcly beneath his hanging body. And after Sukracharya did this for Vimsottari dasa period (twenty years), Lord Shiva appeared before him and give him this Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra to restore his physical condition. Hence the name Maha Sanjivini Mantra.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted by anybody. It is important one understands the meaning of this mantra word for word before chanting it. That’s because by knowing the meaning, the aspirant can easily contemplate on the aspect of birth and death cycle.

So here’s the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and its translation:

Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pusti vardhanam
Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrtyor mukshiya mamritat

Translation:

Om. We worship and adore you, O three-eyed one, O Shiva. You are sweet gladness, the fragrance of life, who nourishes us, restores our health, and causes us to thrive. As, in due time, the stem of the cucumber weakens, and the gourd is freed from the vine, so free us from attachment and death, and do not withhold immortality.

Here’s a word by word translation of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra:

tri-ambaka-m “the three-eyed-one”
yaja-mahe “we praise”
sugandhi-m “the fragrant”
pusti-vardhana-m “the prosperity-increaser”
urvaruka-m “disease, attachment, obstacles in life, and resulting depression”
iva “-like”
bandhanat “from attachment Stem (of the gourd); but more generally, unhealthy attachment”
mrtyor “from death”
mukshiya “may you liberate”
ma “not”
amritat realization of immortality

Du’a (Dua) – worship of Allah

In islam on November 30, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Du’a or Dua (as it is commonly written) a prayer of asking or request in Islam. It is an Arabic word meaning ‘to call out’ or to summon. It is regarded as the second greatest acts of worship in Islam.

The Qur’an quotes Allah’s commands related to Dua:

“Call on Me; I will answer you!”

Prophet Muhammad spoke of it as the most noble act of a Muslim. He called it the ‘best form of worship’.

Kinds of Dua:
There are essentially two types of supplication or Dua – a Du’a al-mas’alah (Dua of Asking) and a Du’a al-ibadah (Dua of Worship).

A dua is called Du’a al-mas’alah (Dua of Asking) when the supplicant asks Allah for something. It may be a need or a request to remove some danger.

One best example is:
Rabbi la tadharni fardaw wa-anta Khairul Waritheen
O my Lord! Leave me not without offspring, though thou art the best of inheritors

A dua is called Du’a al-ibadah (Dua of Worship) when the supplicant worships Allah in his prayer. Usually even some Duas of asking are also considered Duas of Worship because even Dua of Asking engages in worship of the Almighty. But dua of worship is best described when the prayer offered does not include any request for a fulfillment of need.

Example:
Bismillahi, al-ladhi, La illaha illa huwa
In the Name of Allah. There is no God but He.

Other examples include duas given during salat, zakaat or fasts.

Dalai Lama’s definition of Om Mani Padme Hum

In Buddhism on November 25, 2008 at 12:10 pm

H.H. the 14th Dalai Lama’s definition

Dalai Lama is considered to be the incarnation of Avalokiteshvara or Chenrezig and his devotees are particularly partial to this mantra. He defines the mantra like this:

“It is very good to recite the mantra Om mani padme hum, but while you are doing it, you should be thinking on its meaning, for the meaning of the six syllables is great and vast… The first, Om [...] symbolizes the practitioner’s impure body, speech, and mind; it also symbolizes the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[...]“

“The path is indicated by the next four syllables. Mani, meaning jewel, symbolizes the factors of method: (the) altruistic intention to become enlightened, compassion, and love.[...]“

“The two syllables, padme, meaning lotus, symbolize wisdom[...]“

“Purity must be achieved by an indivisible unity of method and wisdom, symbolized by the final syllable hum, which indicates indivisibility[...]“

“Thus the six syllables, om mani padme hum, mean that in dependence on the practice of a path which is an indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech, and mind into the pure exalted body, speech, and mind of a Buddha[...]“

Om mani padme hum is one of the most important mantras in Buddhism. This is the mantra of Avalokiteshavara, the bodhisattva of compassion. In Tibet the bodisattva is also called Chenrezig while the Chinese name is Guanyin. This mantra has six syllables and is associated with four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara.

Some say this mantra originated from Sadhanamala published as early as the twelveth century while others claim the mantra has its source in Karandavyuha Sutra in the Chinese Buddhist canon.

There are various versions of the mantra as this mantra is very famous and is chanted by buddhists of many countries.

In Devanagari: Om Mani Padme Hum
In Tibetan: Om Mani Peme Hung
In Korean Hangul: Om Mani Padeume Hum
In Japanese Katakana: On Mani Hatsumei Un
In Mongolian:: Um maani badmi khum
In Chinese pinyin: Am Mani Bami Hong

Meaning of Om mani padme hum:
Various buddhist schools interpret the mantra differently. But the essence and function of the mantra remain the same.

Mani padme is frequently interpreted as ‘jewel in the lotus’ from Sanskirt Mani-lotus and padme-lotus. Another interpretation of mani padme is ‘Jewel Lotus’, an epithet of Avaloktesvara bodhisattva. Om and Hum are harmonic tunes of non-duality and limitless compassion respectively. Om corresponds to the crown chakra visualized as white light while hum is represents the heart chakra seen as a blue light.

Some schools of Buddhism, especially the Tibetan Buddist, take the mantra’s six syllables to be symbolic or representation of purification of the six realms of existence.

Om purifies pride.
Ma purifies jealousy and lust for entertainment
Ni purfies passion and desire
Pad purifies ignorance and prejudice
Me purifies poverty and possessiveness
Hum purifies agression and hatred

Hence the recital and meditation over the mantra removes ones causes of human suffering.

Thanksgiving Day and its significance

In christian on November 22, 2008 at 7:18 am

Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in every November in the United States. This year it falls on 27 November. Its usually a end of harvest season and in US it is an American Federal holiday. It originated as a religious community tradition where the community offers thanks to God for its material and spiritual possession. Of late it has become a day for national celebration, festivities and general gaiety. The period between Thanksgiving and New Year is now called the holiday season.

American Thanksgiving’s origins can be traced to as early as the 1565 when on September 8 when about 600 spanish settlers landed on what is today St. Augustine, Florida and held a communal Thanksgiving for their safe journey. Today it is considered the first Thanksgiving of US. Next notable Thanksgiving days were on December 4, 1619 at the Virginia Colony and the Thanksgiving of the Pilgrims of Plymouth in 1621. The 1777 Thanksgiving after the Battle of Saratoga is another important date in the history of American Thanksgiving. On October 3, 1789, George Washington made Thanksgiving a national day.

Most important part of the Thanksgiving is the family meal in every home. The whole family gathers at the meal and start with the saying of grace. The meal usually consists of roasted turkey, pumkin pie, mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet corn, etc.

There are also communal feeding of the poor and most foods are collected by various organizations from every home several days before the Thanksgiving. For this reason the food primarily consists of canned food. Though Thanksgiving is not really associated with the religious past of Christianity, it is the only non-holy day that sees mass gatherings of Christians at various Catholic churches.

Thanksgiving is also a time for shopping and public parades in the US. Seasonal shopping season usually begins on friday next to Thanksgiving and is usually called the Black Friday. But due to commercialized consumerism there have been protests across US since several years and some communities observe Black Friday as the Buy Nothing Day.

Various national parades take place during that day and here is a short list of American Thanksgivin Parades:

  • Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, New York
  • McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade, Chicago, Illinois
  • 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • America’s Hometown Thanksgiving Parade, Plymouth, Massachusetts
  • H-E-B Holiday Parade, Houston, Texas
  • Ameren St. Louis Thanksgiving Parade, St. Louis, Missouri
  • America’s Thanksgiving Parade, Detroit, Michigan
  • UBS Parade Spectacular, Stamford, Connecticut

Gayatri Mantra and its meaning

In hinduism on November 20, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Gayatri Mantra is one of the oldest and the holiest mantras among Hindus. Traditionally the source for Gayatri Mantra is the vedas. Since the actual verse in the Vedas was in the form of a Vedic chant, it was rephrased many times variously and is still used by Hindus all over the world. It is considered the most powerful mantra by many Hindus. The mantra is also called the ‘Mother of the Vedas’.

Gayatri, also called Savitri,  is five-faced Goddess who presides over the five human senses and hence protects the five life forces of any aspirant who chants her mantra with devotion and focus. Lord Krishna, in Bhagvad Gita, says to Arujuna ‘Among all mantras, I am the Gayatri’.

Here is the mantra and a list of its common interpretations:

Aum bhur bhuwah swaha tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dheemahi dhiyo yo naha prachodayat

Translation/Interpretation:
May the Almighty God illuminate our intellect to lead us along the righteous path

Other interpretations:

Interpretation of the Mantra by Sir William Jones

“Let us adore the supremacy of that Divine Sun, the Godhead, who illuminates all, who recreates all, from whom all proceed, to whom all must return, whom we invoke to direct our understanding aright in our progress towards his holy seat.”

Interpretation of the Mantra by the Arya Samaj

“O God, Thou art the giver of life, the remover of pain and sorrow, the bestower of happiness; O Creator of the Universe, may we receive Thy supreme sin-destroying light; may Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.”

Interpretation of Mantra in the Brahmo religion

As Savitr in the original Sanskrit may be interpreted in two ways, first as the sun, secondly as the “originator or creator”, Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Maharshi Debendranath Tagore used that word in the second sense. Interpreted in their way the whole formula may be thus rendered :

“We meditate on the worshipable power and glory of Him who has created the earth, the nether world and the heavens (i.e. the universe), and who directs our understanding.”

Gayatri Mantra removes all obstacles in your path and bestows you with wisdom and spiritual growth.

Navakar Mantra for humility

In Jainism on November 19, 2008 at 5:50 pm

Navakar Mantra (alternatively known as Namokar Mantra, Namaskar Mantra or Navkar Mantra) is the central mantra of Jains. By chanting this mantra an aspirant is offering respects to five spiritual guides or masters called Panch Parmesthi together. These five people are Arihantas, Siddhas, Acharyas, Upadyayas and Sadhus or Sadhvis. The most important point to note here is that the mantra makes no mention of any names of any specific people including Tirthankaras and Siddhas. The reason for this is that the mantra seeks to guide an aspirant’s focus on to the virtues and spiritual aspects of the Panch Parmesthi rather than on the names and lives of earlier spiritual guides. It is common belief among Jains that by chanting this mantar and striving to emulate the virtues of Panch Parmesthi, the aspirant will become inspired and be shown the path to liberation.

Let us look at the mantra, its meaning and the Panch Parmesthi a bit more closely:

Mantar:

Namo Arihantânam
Namo Siddhânam
Namo Âyariyânam
Namo Uvajjhâyanam
Namo Loe Savva Sahûnam
Eso Panch Namokkaro, Savva Pâvappanâsano
Mangalanam Cha Savvesim, Padhamam Havai Mangalam

English Translation:
I bow to the Arihantas (Prophets).
I bow to the Siddhas (Liberated Souls).
I bow to the Acharyas (Preceptors or Spiritual Leaders).
I bow to the Upadhyaya (Teachers).
I bow to all the Sadhus (Saints).
This fivefold bow (mantra) destroys all sins and obstacles
and of all auspicious mantras, is the first and foremost one.

I bow to the Arihantas – Arihantas means prophets. The word is made of two root words – Ari and Hanta. Ari means ememies and hanta means destroyer. Hence Arihanta is literally Destroyer of Enemies. But just like no mention of actual prophets or gurus is made in the mantar, here too enemies means human vices in each of us rather than real physical enemies. Thus Arihant is a person who has successfully destroyed his ego, anger, physical craving, greed, etc.

I bow to the Siddhas
– Liberated people. People who have attained salvation and who have broken free of the chain of birth and death. They are said to be free from the karmic debt and do not collect any more karmas.

I bow to the Acharyas – Spiritual leaders are those people who carry the word and message of the Tirthankaras. Since the last Tirthankara was Mahavira, Acharyas after him are all those who dedicate their life to spreading and upholding the message Lord Mahavira.

I bow to all the Upadhyaya – Upadhyayas are teachers who have complete knowledge of Agamas, the Jain scriptures. They are also teachers because they teach the scriptures to other aspirants.

I bow to all the Sadhus – A sadhu or sadhvi is a man or a woman who was previously a householder and who subsequently, having been disillusioned with the material life, has given up worldly matters for the sake of spiritual upliftment.

Waheguru means Almighty God

In Sikhism on November 18, 2008 at 5:47 pm

Waheguru (alternatively pronounced as Vahiguru or Vahguru) is the Gurumantar for Sikhs. It is also called Mool Mantar or Mul Mantar. It is a reference to God. Literal meaning of the word is ‘Wonderful Lord’ in Gurumuki language. The term is made from two root words – Wah and Guru.

Wah is an expression of wonder, while Guru means teacher (spiritual/enlightened teacher in this context). ‘Waheguru’ occurs 18 times in Shri Guru Granth Sahib.  Other names used are Onkar, Satguru (true teacher), Satnaam (true name), Rama, Rahman and Purushah.

Guru Granth Sahib has a verse explains that God is one and is only referred to by different names by different people. Here is the verse:

Koyi Bole Ram Ram, Koyi Khuda
Koyi Seve Gosain, Koyi Allah
Kaaran Karan Kareem
Kirpa Taar Raheem

Translation:

Some call (you) Ram Ram, Some Khuda
Some serve (you) as the Gosain, some Allah
You alone are the cause of everything
Shower your mercy and Compassion (on me)

Other names for God in Sikhism are: OnKar, Nir-vair, Akaal-moorat and Gobind.  Waheguru is used in meditation and chanting by Sikhs. Chanting can be mental, verbal with or without a rosary. By repeating it egoism is cast out and one becomes humble.

Typing Waheguru on 9Dozen.com

There are two ways to take up chanting of Waheguru on 9Dozen.com. One, you can type the word repeatedly in the chant box for a set number of times everyday.

Alternatively, if you prefer mental chanting you can use the ‘chant, cut, paste’ method of chanting. In this method you copy the Gurumantar text, then, for every mental repetition you paste the mantar into the chant box and press enter. That way you can keep count of how many times you have chanted it without trying to hold the numbers in your mind which is quite distracting. In the end you can simply know  your count by looking at the count number above your chant box.

Early morning is one of the best times to chant the Gurumantar since chanting it also calms your mind and brings peace of mind. You can remain calm and relaxed the rest of the day. But if you find it difficult to keep up the early morning chant, then you can follow any time that is convenient for you. However, it would be very beneficial if you can type the chant for a few minutes before beginning your daily work.

Concentrate on the meaning of the word while you are typing. Try to reflect on the aspect of a Supreme Creator. By chanting Waheguru your ego is subdued and you become humble.

Subhan’allah and its meaning

In islam on November 17, 2008 at 10:42 am

In general, the term Subhan’Allah can mean ‘Glorious is Allah’ or ‘Exalted is Allah’. But the meaning of the word goes deeper and is insightful than that.

Mohammed bin AbeeBakr Abdulqader al-Razee, in his classic book “Mukhtar al-Sihah” explains the meaning of the word like this -

The meaning of subhanallah is making Allah pure, and it is bound to its original word (sabh, meaning void) as if he said, I verily absolve Allah from all evil.

Like he said, the origin for the word is sabh, voidness, or tasbeeh, making something void.

This would render the term Subhan’allah to mean Allah is void. However the word means more than that. Subhan’allah means ‘Allah is void of all evil’, where ‘of all evil’ is left unsaid but always understood by devout Muslims.

And this is the way Subhan’alla is used in the Quran. For example it says; “Subhanallah amma yasiffon – Void is Allah from that (evil) which they ascribe (to Him)”.

Some devout muslims also tend to look at the root word ’sabh’ to mean ‘immersed in’. Hence Subhan’allah could also mean immersed in the almighty, being a part of Him.

The word is most commonly used by Muslims during their salat (prayer) and during khutba (sermons).

TYPING SUBHAN’ALLAH ON 9DOZEN.COM

Chant or typing Subhan’allah has immense benefits. But one must type while simultaneously meditating upon the word and its deep meaning. Such a recital or typing will bring purity of thought, one-pointed concentration as well as increases ones understanding of Him. It also cleanses one’s soul and removes evil from the heart.

Type this chant or use ‘chant, copy, paste‘ method.

Allot time for daily chanting and try to stick to one schedule. If you typed Subhan’allah in the evening then type it everyday in the evening.

Start now, there is no better time like now.

Aum and its power!

In hinduism on November 17, 2008 at 10:10 am

Alternatively written as OM, Aum is the most sacred syllable in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. It has also been various described as the eternal syllable, mystic word, representative aspect of the Hindu Trinity, representing the three vedas. Jains consider it to be the one syllable to represent the five Parameshtis, the venerated authorities.

The past, the present and the future are said to be represented by this sacred syllable. Most hindu mantras begin with this sacred syllable.

According to the Mandukya Upanishad, “Om is the one eternal syllable of which all that exists is but the development. The past, the present, and the future are all included in this one sound, and all that exists beyond the three forms of time is also implied in it”.

Aum is divided into three intonations – A, U, M. It represents the entire range of sounds a human vocal chord can produce starting from A where the lips are parted completely, moving through U and ending with M where the lips are completely pressed together – thus representing the entire spectrum of the vocal sounds.

The vibrations produced by the intonation of Aum are said to be all powerful and all cleansing. That is the reason why most hindu chants start with this potent syllable and why many Hindus start their daily activity after chanting or writing Aum for a set number of times.

How many affirmations can I give myself at a time?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 11:15 am

It is better to stick to one Autosuggestion program at a time. You can give yourself affirmations for two topics only if they are related. For instance, it is fine to take up two Autosuggestion programs – one for removing stage fear and the other for reducing general anxiety because they are related to each other. But if you want to give affirmations for procrastination and removal of nail biting, it is better you deal with one issue first and take up the second after a few days.

Even in case of related issues, it is very important that you give each topic a seperate sitting and also give a gap of atleast two hours between each sitting. For instance, if you are doing an Autosuggestion session for stage fear, then give a gap of two hours or more before doing an Autosuggestion session for anxiety reduction.

How many times should I type one affirmation?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 11:09 am

Repetition strenghtens your belief. Try to type a minimum of twenty times per sitting. It is better if you can have two or more sittings per day initially and have a sitting before you go to sleep. Note: For issues like phobias, susbstance abuse, manic depression, excessive overweight, anorexia, etc. see ‘Problems that can be solved using Autosuggestion‘.

Make sure you understand what the chant means.
If the chant is the name of a God, contemplate on the form of the God while you type.
Type a minumum number of times (say 20 times) per sitting.
Medidate over the meaning of the chant every time you type.
Typing chants just before you begin your work, study or other important tasks can be beneficial.
Be steady and consistent in your daily sittings. Hurrying can demotivate you over a period of time.

Spread the good word. Share chants with family and friends.

How to frame affirmations?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 11:05 am
Keep your statements simple and straightforward.
Eg.
Use:
I am relaxed and calm throughout my office hours.
Avoid:
I am very relaxed at any point of the day and remain calm during my office hours in spite of the hectic schedule and heavy workload.

Use words that you understand and are comfortable with.

Always keep your affirmations positive. If you want to get rid of an unwanted personality trait in you, write down the opposite state of mind you must achieve in order to replace the unwanted one.

Eg.
Use:
I love life and enjoy living every moment of it.
Avoid:
I am less depressed about living.

Affirmations are new beliefs of the mind. So frame them as such. Sentences expressing desires are bad autosuggesions.

Eg:
Use:
I am focussed and determined. I complete every project I take up. (establishes a new belief)

Avoid:
I want to be more focussed and I should not lose interest in projects halfway through.

Affirmations must describe what you want to achieve. And they should state it as if you have already achieved what you wanted.

Eg.
Use:
I have a powerful memory. (describes you after you achieved your goal.)
Avoid:
My memory is improving.

Avoid using the word ‘not’ in any affirmation.

Eg:
Use:
I have a great physical stamina. I am in excellent health
Avoid:
I am not physically weak.

Limit affirmations to a sentence or two.

You can remove punctuation marks if you feel they are difficult to type and are hampering you. Similarly you can type the entire sentence in lower case or upper case.

How to be successful in autosuggestion?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 11:02 am

Follow the below steps to better achieve your goals:

Step 1: Write your goal
What is your goal? What you want to achieve with the help of autosuggestions. Write it down. Remember, you should write down what positive state you want to be in, instead of what problem you want to get rid of.

Eg: If you want to be less short-tempered, your goal is to be a calm, peaceful and understanding person.

Step 2: Imagine success
Imagine or Visualize a scene where you have achieved your goal and you are using your new strenghts effectively.

Eg: Imagine yourself as being understanding and calm in a situation where you would usually lose your temper. Imagine your family admiring your patience and understanding.

Step 3: Write autosuggestions
Simply convert the positive goal you have already written into your autosuggestion. For more about sentence structure of autosuggestion see ‘How to frame an autosuggestion sentence?’.

Step 4: Read autosuggestions
Read your autosuggestions to silently in your mind and try to grasp the full meaning of the sentences you have written.

Step 5: Start typing
Begin typing. Type with deliberate slowness. It is important to contemplate on the meaning of the sentence you are typing. You must do this for the first twenty one times you type the sentence. Later, you can let your mind wander away while your typing.

Step 6: Just read through your typed text
After you finish typing your autosuggestion for the day, just gaze through your entire typed text calmly for a few seconds. Then hit the close chant suggestion to exit out of the page.

Step 6: Repeat consistently
Type a minimum of twenty times per sitting. It is very important to give your eyes and body rest whenever they feel tired. Try to keep each sitting less than ten minutes. Maintain healthy sitting posture while typing.

Repeat the same autosuggestion every day or twice a day. Repetition is one very important key to success. There may be many previous negative suggestions and beliefs in your mind; repetition of positive autosuggestions will alter your belief system effectively.

How does autosuggestion work?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 11:01 am

Autosuggestion is a powerful technique to directly plant suggestions and beliefs into the subconscious mind.

Human mind has three major divisions within it – the conscious mind, the subconscious mind and the critical factor.

The conscious mind controls our voluntary actions and our conscious thoughts. Whereas the subconscious is a very powerful part of the mind that has the power to alter our entire personality. It also controls the involuntary actions of the body and our memory. The critical factor, a part of the conscious mind, acts as a filter between the conscious mind and subconscious mind. It filters every information a person receives through the five senses and decides which information is useful and which it should reject. The subconscious mind has no such discrimination, it simply accepts as true all the information it receives through the critical factor.

So by bypassing the critical factor, one can effectively alter the inner belief system and improve one’s personality. Autosuggestion is one of the most effective methods to accomplish this.

Writing and typing are two methods that are capable of taking thoughts directly into the subconscious mind. While most written or typed information does pass through the critical factor, when a same sentence is repeated over and over, the conscious mind slowly loses its focus and begins to stray away. And that causes the critical factor of the cosncious to stop filtering information. Thus by typing positive autosuggestions repeatedly, the information goes directly into the subconscious mind and starts altering your belief system.

It is beneficial to stick to a particular time daily to type the chants or prayers. It is also beneficial if you type the chant everyday just before you begin your work, study or other important tasks. In such cases, choose a chant that is either your God’s name or chants of peace.

How many times should I type a chant?

In FAQs on November 16, 2008 at 10:34 am
This depends on factors like your religion, time available, your personal interest and devotion. Some chants are supposed to be written or typed a prescribed number of times, like 108 times, while some chants can be repeated any number of times.

As a beginner, choose a smaller figure so you can get comfortable with typing. Perhaps a target of 108 can be a good starting goal. You can later increment the number for the same chant if you prefer. Daily targets are good to test your schedule and dedication levels.

Try to type a minimum of twenty times per sitting. And you can have any number of sittings per day depending on your personal goals, daily schedule and your motivation.

Choosing a chant is a personal issue and is based on the religion, God form you worship and the purpose for chanting. Choose a chant that you are comfortable with and based on the God form you worship. Also it is very important to know and understand the meaning of the selected chant, if it is other than God’s name. In some religions, special chants are given to the initiate by the Guru and you can type those chants too.
If you are after a specific goal like career success, removing obstacles, etc then you have to choose that particular chant. We are soon updating the website with a huge list of chants each with specific purpose. And for such chants there is also a prescribed number of times you must type the chant each day.
