Shiva Gayatri and its meaning

In hinduism, Vedic on December 15, 2008 at 6:55 am

Shiva Gayatri is one of the most powerful Gayatri Mantras. It is dedicated to Shiva (Siva, Rudra).
Shiva is the destroyer and the God of sexuality. As a destroyer, Shiva destroys all evils in the body and mind, thus purifying the aspirant. He also makes things clear in the mind which is a natural consequence of destruction of evil in body and mind. Since He is also the god of fertility and sexuality, chanting Shiva gayatri gives the aspirant to control baser instincts like desire for sex, etc.Worship of Shiva dates back to pre-Vedic and Vedic period. He is one of the most powerful forces controlling creation.

Shiva Gayatri:

Om Pancahvaktraye Vidmahe
Mahadevaye Dhimahi
Tanno Rudra Prachodayat

Translation:

We meditate on Mahadeva, may Rudra deirect our minds.

Panchavaktra (or Panchamukha) is combination of all five forms of Shiva. This form of Shiva is depicted as five-headed God. More about Pachavaktra Shiva in the next post.

What is Dattatreya Jayanti?

In hinduism, Vedic on December 12, 2008 at 7:32 am

Today is Dattatreya Jayanti. So who is Dattatreya and what does this Dattatreya Jayanti mean to all who worship him?

Dattatreya Jayanti is celebrated on the full moon day of the Margaseersha (Margashirsha) month. On that day, the feast of Dattatreya is celebrated by his worshippers.

Dattatreya is the combined avatar of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. There is a very interesting story behind the birth of Dattatreya.

Many centuries ago, there lived a rishi (sage, muni) called Atri. His wife Anasuya was very devoted and a pativrata. Narada used to talk a lot about Anasuya and her devotion to her Atri. That made Saraswati, Lakhsmi and Parvati jealous of Anasuya. They decided to really test the strength of Anasuya’s fidelity to her husband Atri. So they requested their husbands Brahma, Vishnu and Maheswara (Siva) to test Anasuya.

So Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva (Shankar) disguised themselves as sages and go to pativrat Anasuya’s house when her husband Atri was not at home. Anasuya welcomed the trinity and requests them to stay for lunch.

Brahma, Visnu and Shiva agree to that but they put one condition. They ask Anasuya to serve them naked.

Anasuya is shocked but cannot refuse the sages. But at the same time she is a devoted wife and hence cannot stand naked before three strange men even though the three are sages. Finally Anasuya hit upon a solution. With the power of her sincerity and devotion she turned the trinity
into three babies. She then removed her clothes and served the three babies their food. She treated the babies as if they were her own.

Anasuya’s husband Atri returns and immediately recognizes the babies for who they are. Anasuya tells her husband about the sages. Atri explains to his wife who the three actually were. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva reappear in their own forms and bless the devoted couple. They leave back to the heavens but they also leave a part of themselves in the form of a baby. This baby is named Dattatreya and thus Dattatreya is born.

Dattatreya remained the son of Anasuya and Atri. He grew up to be a sage and a celibate. He remained digambara (naked) throughout his life.

Dattatreya Mantra:

Om Namo Bhagavate Dattaatreyaaya Smarana Maatra Samtushhtaaya

Varuna Gayatri and its meaning

In hinduism, Vedic on December 4, 2008 at 5:49 am

Lord Varuna is one of the Trinity of the Vedas. He was originally the god of Rta (universal law and celestial order) during the vedic period. He is the supreme keeper of law and cosmic order. Hence Varuna Gayatri is a very powerful mantra that can be used to bring order to your house, family, body, career, education, etc. Since Varuna is also the lord of the waters, it is said chanting the Varuna Gayatri can ward off any harm from water.

Varuna Gayatri is also very beneficial for couples who are always quarreling or having disagreements between them, because the Varuna Gayatri increases the love between man and woman. It is good for newly weds as well as husband and wife who have been married for long.

Likewise chant Varuna Gayatri to get rid of disorders in your body and mind. It is a very powerful mantra and can be chanted at any time of the day.

Here’s the Varuna Gayatri:

Aum Jalbimbaye Vvidmahe
Nila Purushaye Dhimahi
Tanno Varunah Prachodayat

Translation:

Om, Let us meditate on the reflection of water
O person of ocean blue, give me higher intellect
And let the God of water illuminate my mind

As noted in the tranlation, meditating upon the Varuna Gayatri also helps the aspirant find out all evils hidden within the mind and body. There is a legend illustrating this point.

It is said that Sage Vasistha was a very close associate of Lord Varuna. Once the sage committed some sin unconsciously and Varuna, being righteous as ever and undiscriminating in the enforcement of the cosmic order, punished sage Vasistha and cut his friendship with the sage. Sage Vasistha came to realize he committed some sin unconsciously and prayed to Lord Varuna to tell him what the sin was and also free him from the sin.

As the story illustrates, praying to Varuna or chanting Varuna Gayatri brings about illumination for an aspirant and reveals all hidden evils in the aspirant’s body and mind.
