Chaturmukha Brahma

Chaturmukha Brahma

Brahma Gayatri is for those who seek knowledge, know the real essence behind things, become creative, increase productivity and become active mentally. Brahma Gayatri is for Lord Brahma, the creator. Brahma is father of all creation and hence by knowing Him we gain all knowledge and the essence of knowledge itself. Brahma is the grandfather of Manu, the first man on earth (Hindu equivalent to Adam).

It is indeed strange that there are no temples to worship such an important god. But nevertheless, Brahma remains the source of all creation and He alone can reveal the knowledge of birth and life.

Brahma Gayatri:
Aum Parameshwaraya Vidmahe
Paratatvaye Dhimahi
Tanno Brahma Prachodayat

There is another Brahma Gayatri:

Aum Chatur Mukhaya Vidmahe
Hamsarudhaya Dhimahi
Tanno Brahma Prachodayat

Translation: Let us meditate on the great lord with four faces and is seated on a white swan. May Brahma, the Creator, inspire and illuminate our mind.

Varuna Gayatri and its meaning

In hinduism, Vedic on December 4, 2008 at 5:49 am

Lord Varuna is one of the Trinity of the Vedas. He was originally the god of Rta (universal law and celestial order) during the vedic period. He is the supreme keeper of law and cosmic order. Hence Varuna Gayatri is a very powerful mantra that can be used to bring order to your house, family, body, career, education, etc. Since Varuna is also the lord of the waters, it is said chanting the Varuna Gayatri can ward off any harm from water.

Varuna Gayatri is also very beneficial for couples who are always quarreling or having disagreements between them, because the Varuna Gayatri increases the love between man and woman. It is good for newly weds as well as husband and wife who have been married for long.

Likewise chant Varuna Gayatri to get rid of disorders in your body and mind. It is a very powerful mantra and can be chanted at any time of the day.

Here’s the Varuna Gayatri:

Aum Jalbimbaye Vvidmahe
Nila Purushaye Dhimahi
Tanno Varunah Prachodayat

Translation:

Om, Let us meditate on the reflection of water
O person of ocean blue, give me higher intellect
And let the God of water illuminate my mind

As noted in the tranlation, meditating upon the Varuna Gayatri also helps the aspirant find out all evils hidden within the mind and body. There is a legend illustrating this point.

It is said that Sage Vasistha was a very close associate of Lord Varuna. Once the sage committed some sin unconsciously and Varuna, being righteous as ever and undiscriminating in the enforcement of the cosmic order, punished sage Vasistha and cut his friendship with the sage. Sage Vasistha came to realize he committed some sin unconsciously and prayed to Lord Varuna to tell him what the sin was and also free him from the sin.

As the story illustrates, praying to Varuna or chanting Varuna Gayatri brings about illumination for an aspirant and reveals all hidden evils in the aspirant’s body and mind.

Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and its meaning

In hinduism on December 1, 2008 at 12:15 pm

There are very few mantras that stand on par with Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra (also known as Mahamrityunjay Mantra, Rudra Mantra, Tryambakam Mantra or Maha Sanjivini Mantra). This mantra is said to have the power to remove all sufferings, ward off all evils, remove diseases and bestow the aspirant with health and energy. And it is said that when this mantra is it chanted with great devotion and serious contemplation it is said that the knowledge of this birth and death cycle is revealed to the aspirant. And thus it helps in overcoming the fear of death.

The literal translation of this name means Great Death-conquering Mantra. This mantra is from the Vedas. It is written in the Yajur Veda (3-60). This mantra worships a three-eyed deity commonly identified with Lord Shiva. It is also called Tryambakam Mantra or Mrita-Sanjivini mantra or Rudra Mantra. The reason for it being named Tryambakam Mantra is self explanatory because it worships a three-eyed deity. Similary, since the mantra observes Shiva in His fiery aspect of Rudra, it is also called Rudra Mantra.

The name Mrita-Sanjivini mantra has a story behind it. It is said that Sage Sukracharya accepted a challenge of Lord Indra and took up a rigorous penance of hanging upside down from a tree with his face being fanned with fumes of a fire direcly beneath his hanging body. And after Sukracharya did this for Vimsottari dasa period (twenty years), Lord Shiva appeared before him and give him this Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra to restore his physical condition. Hence the name Maha Sanjivini Mantra.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra can be chanted by anybody. It is important one understands the meaning of this mantra word for word before chanting it. That’s because by knowing the meaning, the aspirant can easily contemplate on the aspect of birth and death cycle.

So here’s the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and its translation:

Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pusti vardhanam
Urvarukamiva bandhanan mrtyor mukshiya mamritat

Translation:

Om. We worship and adore you, O three-eyed one, O Shiva. You are sweet gladness, the fragrance of life, who nourishes us, restores our health, and causes us to thrive. As, in due time, the stem of the cucumber weakens, and the gourd is freed from the vine, so free us from attachment and death, and do not withhold immortality.

Here’s a word by word translation of the Mahamrityunjay Mantra:

tri-ambaka-m “the three-eyed-one”
yaja-mahe “we praise”
sugandhi-m “the fragrant”
pusti-vardhana-m “the prosperity-increaser”
urvaruka-m “disease, attachment, obstacles in life, and resulting depression”
iva “-like”
bandhanat “from attachment Stem (of the gourd); but more generally, unhealthy attachment”
mrtyor “from death”
mukshiya “may you liberate”
ma “not”
amritat realization of immortality

Du’a (Dua) – worship of Allah

In islam on November 30, 2008 at 1:03 pm

Du’a or Dua (as it is commonly written) a prayer of asking or request in Islam. It is an Arabic word meaning ‘to call out’ or to summon. It is regarded as the second greatest acts of worship in Islam.

The Qur’an quotes Allah’s commands related to Dua:

“Call on Me; I will answer you!”

Prophet Muhammad spoke of it as the most noble act of a Muslim. He called it the ‘best form of worship’.

Kinds of Dua:
There are essentially two types of supplication or Dua – a Du’a al-mas’alah (Dua of Asking) and a Du’a al-ibadah (Dua of Worship).

A dua is called Du’a al-mas’alah (Dua of Asking) when the supplicant asks Allah for something. It may be a need or a request to remove some danger.

One best example is:
Rabbi la tadharni fardaw wa-anta Khairul Waritheen
O my Lord! Leave me not without offspring, though thou art the best of inheritors

A dua is called Du’a al-ibadah (Dua of Worship) when the supplicant worships Allah in his prayer. Usually even some Duas of asking are also considered Duas of Worship because even Dua of Asking engages in worship of the Almighty. But dua of worship is best described when the prayer offered does not include any request for a fulfillment of need.

Example:
Bismillahi, al-ladhi, La illaha illa huwa
In the Name of Allah. There is no God but He.

Other examples include duas given during salat, zakaat or fasts.
